Government publishes encouraging exam resultsPosted : 30/06/2010
The Government Office for Disability has published some interesting and very encouraging data regarding exam results for pupils without SEN, with SEN but no Statement, and with SEN with a Statement. There is a 100% increase in the number of children with SEN (but no statement) achieving 5 GCSEs at A*-C over the past 4 years. a 75% increase in the number of children with statements achieving 5 GCSEs at A*-C over the past 4 years. Children’s Legal Centre: new web portalPosted : 23/04/2010
The Children’s Legal Centre has launched a new website - www.lawstuff.org.uk It aims to provide a wide range of information to young people about their legal rights and the laws affecting them. It contains legal information on all aspects of their lives – education, healthcare, discrimination, policing, age-based laws, leaving home and more. It also contains information for young people in care or leaving care, and for migrant children.

NPPN Briefing - Update on law regarding Annual ReviewsPosted : 21/04/2010
The National Parent Partnership Network (NPPN) have issued a briefing, clarifying the law relating to Annual Reviews, to all Parent Partnership Services. Following the publication of the Children, School and Families Act 2010, there will be additional rights for families to appeal the Local Authority's decision not to amend a statment following annual review.

DCSF - Pupil & Parent Guarantees documentPosted : 18/02/2010
Ed Balls, Secretary of State for Children, Schools and Families states that the Pupil and Parent Guarantees describe the key elements of our schools system. They in large part reflect existing legislative requirements and codify existing expectations of schools. Some of these requirements derive from legislation dating back to the Education Reform Act 1988. In a small number of important areas they are introducing new entitlements - for example, one-to-one tuition, personal tutoring and strengthened home/school agreements. As well as setting out what schools should do and how parents should support them, the Pupil and Parent Guarantees also explain what pupils and parents can do if they are concerned that they are not receiving something they are entitled to. On rare occasions where pupils or parents are not satisfied, they should be able to have their concerns or complaints dealt with in an effective and open way. That is why the DCSF introduced legislation to provide an independent complaints system for pupils and parents. That complaints system - which will listen carefully to the voices of parents and schools - has now also been extended to cover complaints about the Pupil and Parent Guarantees. It is also important that parents and carers understand their responsibilities to their child's school. The Pupil and Parent Guarantees accordingly emphasise the need for parents and carers to play their part in supporting their child's school, and wider learning and development.
